Superfluid Brillouin optomechanics

چکیده
Optomechanical systems couple an electromagnetic cavity to a mechanical resonator which typically is a solid object. The range of phenomena accessible in these systems depends on the properties of the mechanical resonator and on the manner in which it couples to the cavity fields. In both respects, a mechanical resonator formed from superfluid liquid helium o ers several appealing features: low electromagnetic absorption, high thermal conductivity, vanishing viscosity, well-understood mechanical loss, and in situ alignment with cryogenic cavities. In addition, it o ers degrees of freedom that di er qualitatively from those of a solid. Here, we describe an optomechanical system consisting of aminiature optical cavity filled with superfluid helium. The cavity mirrors define optical and mechanical modes with near-perfect overlap, resulting in an optomechanical coupling rate ∼3 kHz. This coupling is used to drive the superfluid and is also used to observe the thermal motion of the superfluid, resolving a mean phonon number as low as eleven.

The Scattering of Light from Liquid Helium
A review is given of the scattering of light by superfluid helium. A brief discussion is given first of the theory of Brillouin and Rayleigh scattering from an ordinary simple pure liquid. It is shown how this discussion must be modified in the case of the superfluid phase of purc 4He, and experimental observations of Brillouin scattering from first sound in liquid helium are described. The dis...

We study the dynamics of the many-body state of ultracold bosons trapped in a bistable optical lattice in an optomechanical resonator controlled by a time-dependent input field. We focus on the dynamics of the many-body system following discontinuous jumps of the intracavity field. We identify experimentally realizable parameters for the bistable quantum phase transition between Mott insulator ...
متن کاملSuperfluid optomechanics: coupling of a superfluid to a superconducting condensate
We investigate the low loss acoustic motion of superfluid He parametrically coupled to a very low loss, superconducting Nb TE011 microwave resonator, forming a gram-scale, sideband resolved, optomechanical system. We demonstrate the detection of a series of acoustic modes with quality factors as high as × 1.4 107. At higher temperatures, the lowest dissipation modes are limited by an intrinsic ...
متن کاملGuided acoustic and optical waves in silicon-on-insulator for Brillouin scattering and optomechanics
We numerically study silicon waveguides on silica showing that it is possible to simultaneously guide optical and acoustic waves in the technologically important silicon on insulator (SOI) material system. Thin waveguides, or fins, exhibit geometrically softened mechanical modes at gigahertz frequencies with phase velocities below the Rayleigh velocity in glass, eliminating acoustic radiation l...
